Inkchaser.com is the concept of parent company (and at the time, employer), Innerworkings. They approached me and one other co-worker to build a consumer-oriented retail printing website, to go live in forty-five days. As we were both server-side Java developers with minimal prior experience in web technologies (ie: Javascript, CSS), this was going to be a serious undertaking. We decided to use Grails as I had previous experience with Groovy and it was built off the Spring/Hibernate stack which we both knew intimately. Twenty days into the project, we brought on board a fresh-out-of-college developer to help us with frontend development. We hit our target release date of forty-five days from conception. During this time, I was also in the process of completing and defending my master's thesis.

Over the next couple months, we expanded the site heavily to become fully automated end-to-end including automated file preflighting and PO issuance to suppliers, as well building an extensive administration section to give necessary administrative abilities to the business and customer service representatives.

The research for my master's thesis was performed at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. We investigated a new method for the rehabilitation of attention in patients suffering from traumatic brain injury using a virtual 3D environment and a 6-DOF (degrees of freedom) haptic robot. I wrote the code to perform the experiment, worked with clinicians when the study was performed on willing patients, and carried out the final analysis, development of thesis, as well as contributed to multiple peer-reviewed papers and conference presentations.

Innerworkings is a publically owned B2B provider of printing services. My first task was to rewrite their warehouse system that was used by a a few hundred different people across the country. It consisted of a number of Spring services to support the management, ordering, and modification of productsin the company's warehouses. It was fully Sarbanes-Oxley compliant and therefore kept transactions of every modification made to an item as well as kept full records on financials of different items. It also included a rich Swing client for full access to all of the products, included viewing modifying current and historical inventory, receiving incoming inventory, printing packing slips, performing fulfillment, printing historical reports, and integration with ShipGear to retrieve actual freight costs. When beginning this project, I had no prior experience with Spring or Hibernate.

After the first project, I built a number of other small to medium-size Swing clients and corresponding backend services to fulfill various corporate needs, worked on different teams to help with server infrastructure, and mentored many younger developers in learning best practices in development.

Quickset specializes in creating pan and tilt systems. Pan and tilt systems are robotic systems, which pan (horizontally) and tilt (vertically). They are most prevalent in security systems. In addition to creating off-the-shelf hardware, Quickset also provides integration between pan/tilts and attachable devices (cameras, floodlights, A/V, etc.) The software team is in charge of developing everything from the backend protocol implementation to the user interface that each client requests. When I joined Quickset, their software had grown to become bloated and unstable and was a maintenance nightmare. It was my duty to create a new architecture that would be easily maintainable, as well as scalable, while, at the same time, fulfilling customer requests that were taking place. I designed a three-tiered architecture to support a variety of devices on the backend, a variety of user interfaces on the frontend, and an abstract communication layer between the two.

Manual Supply was a business I had created which sold CDs via the internet and primarily eBay. I had acquired a Primera disc publisher that could create and label CDs and an internet postage printer. I created software to automate the entire process.
